The Contemporary Art programmes at the Department for Contemporary Art and Creative Writing in Tromsø are the world’s northernmost programmes in fine arts. The bachelor programme was started in 2007 and accepts only a small number of students each year. The first MA students were enrolled in 2012 and the first PhD students started in October 2013. The Contemporary Art programmes are a part of a multidisciplinary faculty for fine arts comprising programmes in creative writing, music, drama and theatre, and mediation of arts and culture, which allows for collaborations and exchange between the disciplines. The Faculty of Fine Arts aims to maintain a high international level and to develop its own particular characteristics, thus offering an alternative to other degree courses in the arts.

The Department for Contemporary Art and Creative Writing moved in September 2013 to new premises in a purpose-converted factory building centrally situated in Tromsø. Tromsø with its 70 000 inhabitants easily facilitates personal relationships and close contacts with other institutions and collaborations.

Being the northernmost institution of its type in the world fosters uniqueness but should not obscure the fact that it also is part of a multi-facetted global arena. Therefore membership in international educational networks that offers collaboration and opportunities for exchanges is vital. Various other collaborative partners as well as guest lecturers from different parts of the world offers students a combination of local roots and international insights and opportunities.

Because of its unique geopolitical situation, with access to a wealth of natural resources and newly developed transport routes, Tromsø is a rapidly growing town. It is part of a region that has long been at an intersection between different cultures and peoples. This naturally has an impact on students and staff, who in turn, influence the region with their activities.

The Academy is a relatively small institution, which makes for a good, shared atmosphere between students, professors, lecturers and other staff members. Joint excursions and other activities further enhance the social environment.
